Barraca da Flora serves fish, prawns and moquecas on the sand of Praia do Madeiro, with shaded tables and a toilet on site. Book your table for lunch.
Praia do Madeiro opens in a half moon of pale sand between the headlands, and on that sand, under a roof of wood and palm thatch, hangs a hand-painted swing sign with Flora's name on it. There is no pavement, no door and no step: you walk in barefoot and the tables sit five paces from the water. What comes out of the kitchen is the catch of the day, prawns and moqueca in a clay pot, carried across the sand by waiters holding the tray high.
This is a lunch place, and it takes bookings. Message them on WhatsApp and book a table in the shade.

The menu is written in Portuguese and English, line by line, and splits into five blocks. The backbone is grilled fish steak and prawns, and everything else turns around them.
The petiscos block is the longest: grilled meca fish steak with potatoes, grilled tuna steak with potatoes, peeled prawns in garlic and oil — on their own or with chips —, breaded prawns, fish strips, breaded chicken strips, and carne de sol with cassava or chips. Almost everything can be ordered with or without a side, which is what lets a long table eat well without one main course per person.
Grilled tuna steak, grilled meca steak, tuna steak with prawns, breaded prawns, grilled chicken fillet and carne de sol. The house states on its own menu that all of them come with rice, salad, banana farofa and chips, so there is no need to add sides.
Above that sit three large plates built for sharing: whole grilled cioba fish with pirao, rice, salad and chips; the peixada, which the house marks as the chef's suggestion and serves with rice, pirao and chips; and bobo de camarao, also a chef's suggestion, with rice and salad. In the photos they arrive in a clay pot, lid resting at the side and yellow rice served apart.
Sides include fried cassava, chips, breaded onion rings and a vegetarian salad for one or two with lettuce, grated carrot, beetroot, tomato, onion, cucumber, egg and fruit. Skewers come in prawn, chicken and cheese, and the menu notes they are served with garlic bread. Broths are two: fish and prawn.
One single dessert line, and it fits the place: seasonal fruit salad. The verified listing confirms dessert is served and that the kitchen works with small plates, useful when lunch stretches out and nobody wants another full course.
The bar is on site, so drinks arrive fast. There is still and sparkling mineral water, a 1.5-litre bottle, coconut water, soft drinks and guarana. Cocktails come in a 350 ml glass: cachaca caipirinha, caipiroska, caipifruta with whatever fruit is in season, and a rum version. Beer comes in long neck and 600 ml bottles, in several brands.
Fresh juices are half a litre — pineapple, mango, passion fruit, orange, lemon and a two-fruit mix — and also come in a one-litre jug of passion fruit or pineapple, which is what settles a table of four in the sun. In the gallery photos they arrive with a flower on the rim and, in one of them, served inside a carved pineapple.
The verified attributes describe somewhere casual and quiet, good for groups and travellers, and good for eating alone. The photos agree: green and white parasols planted in the sand, loungers facing the sea, tables under the thatched roof and the wooden name board hanging from two posts like a swing.
What separates this from an improvised stop is that it has its own toilet and a bar on site, both declared in the verified listing. On a stretch of sand where infrastructure is scarce, that completely changes how long a family can stay.
From the tables you can see the reddish cliffs closing Madeiro to the south and the line of coconut palms running down to the shore. In several gallery photos the glass is in the foreground and the headland sits behind it: that is the frame that defines the place.
This is a lunch house. The verified attributes declare lunch and dessert, and declare neither dinner nor breakfast. So the plan is a daytime one: walk down in the morning, swim, and sit when the sun gets strong and the shade under the roof starts to be worth gold.
The good hour is early, between eleven and midday, when there are still free tables in the front row and the catch of the day is whole. After two in the afternoon the sand fills up and the shaded tables go first. Since they take bookings, a same-day WhatsApp message is the simplest way to secure a spot in the shade.
Before heading down, look at the tide table: Madeiro is walked along the shoreline and the width of the sand changes with the hour. At low tide the beach opens up and the walk from the water to the tables is easy; at high tide the space narrows and it pays to arrive earlier.
It sits on the sand of Praia do Madeiro, the beach that continues north past Baia dos Golfinhos. There is no street address: the reference is the plus code QWJG+4F and, in practice, the wooden name board, visible from a distance because it is planted in the sand.
You get there two ways. Walking along the beach from Baia dos Golfinhos, which is the classic morning stroll. Or coming down from the viewpoint road and leaving the car at the top: the verified listing declares free street parking, which is the fact worth having before you set off.
If you are arriving in Pipa from Natal or the airport, transfers drop you in the village and Madeiro is a short walk or a quick drive away.
The verified listing marks it as good for children, and in practice two things make that work: the toilet and the shade. The sea at Madeiro is calmer than in the centre, and the loungers sit a few metres from the tables, so the adults eat lunch watching the water.
For groups, the attributes confirm they welcome groups and take bookings. The menu is built for it: the large plates — whole fish, peixada, bobo — are made for two or three people, and the petiscos are shared. Payment is by credit card, debit card or phone via NFC, which saves carrying cash onto the beach.
Pets and accessibility are not declared in the verified listing. If you are travelling with a dog or need wheelchair access, ask on WhatsApp before heading down.
Families spending the whole day at Madeiro. Shade, a toilet, loungers and a menu that covers everything from the kids' chicken strips to a whole fish for the adults, without leaving the sand.
Groups after a long lunch with their feet in the sand. Large sharing plates, a one-litre juice jug, 600 ml beers and tables under the thatch: lunch stretches out by itself.
Solo travellers who want quiet. The attributes mark it as good for eating alone, there are small plates on the menu and the atmosphere is calm: a prawn broth and a juice, looking at the headland.
