Abacate Casa do Mar

Come and live this experience that is the sunset here at Abacate Casa do Mar!

The sign is carved into a plank of wood and hangs from the edge of the thatched roof: "Abacate Casa do Mar". Behind it, nothing but the terrace, the tables and the sea of Praia da Pipa breaking a few metres away. The kitchen works with raw fish — salmon poke, sushi, sashimi — and opens seven days a week from noon to 8pm, so lunch here stretches until the sun drops.

How eating works here

The format is the bowl. Salmon poke is the dish the house puts at the front of its menu, and it is built the way a poke is built: a base, the fish cut into cubes, and a round of toppings that change the whole plate. In the bowls the house photographs you can pick out salmon, mango, shredded red cabbage, carrot, avocado, sliced onion, cherry tomatoes and black and white sesame. All of it served in a wooden bowl, on a slatted table.

The kitchen's other front is sushi, and there the platter changes shape: filled maki, breaded pieces, nigiri, slices of salmon and tuna, cucumber and wasabi on the same plate. It is a sharing platter rather than a single serving, and it works well between two or three people.

The house also lists small plates on its menu, the format that lets you order gradually while watching the sea instead of closing the table with one large dish. And there is dessert.

The tableware is part of the format: the bowls are wooden and they land on a slatted table with no cloth. They arrive built, every ingredient in its own place, and get mixed at the table. The sushi platter works the other way round — assembled for half the group, several kinds of piece on one plate — so nobody has to settle on a single thing.

Service is by waiters, with seating indoors and tables outside — those are the ones facing the water. You order from your seat and the table gathers plates one at a time, which is what lets lunch stretch to sunset instead of closing out on the first round.

What to drink

The bar is part of the plan. The house lists alcoholic drinks, spirits, beer, cocktails and wine, and the cocktail is what matches the clock: at five in the afternoon, with the sun dropping over Praia da Pipa, the table assembles itself around a caipirinha and a bowl to pick at.

In the house photos the caipirinhas arrive in tall glasses beside the bowls, on the same slatted table. Wine comes by the glass, and beer is the simplest partner for raw fish.

Since the kitchen closes at 8pm, last orders come early: this terrace is built for sunset, not for the small hours.

The room

The house describes itself as casual, lively and relaxed, and the terrace explains all three. It is an open structure under a thatched roof, with plants hanging from the beams, wooden tables and chairs, and a couple of loungers facing the water. There is no wall between the table and the sea: what you see from your seat is the surf.

The wooden sign carrying the name hangs from the eaves, and that is your landmark for finding the entrance from the sand. Inside there is seating built to the same brief of wood and fibre.

The attribute that shapes the whole visit is "outdoor tables": here the indoor table is plan B. The terrace one is what everybody asks for, which is why it is worth a message ahead if you are a group.

When to go

Abacate Casa do Mar opens all seven days of the week, always on the same clock: noon to 8pm. It never closes for a day, which makes it a safe bet on a Monday or a Tuesday, when part of the village rests.

The lunch window runs from noon to 2.30pm and is the quietest: eat, go down to the sand, come back. From 4pm to 6pm the terrace falls into shade, with the sun side-on over the water and the table set up for picking and drinking. And from 6pm to 8pm comes the sunset stretch, the busiest of the day — that is when a booking earns its keep.

There is no late dinner here. The kitchen closes at 8pm, so this house belongs to the daytime and the end of the afternoon, not to the night. If the plan is dinner at ten, it is not this one; if the plan is to finish a beach day sitting and watching the water, it is.

And one thing worth checking before you walk down: the tide. What you see from the table changes with the water, and at high tide the strip of sand in front of the terrace shrinks. Before heading out, look at the tide table and pick your hour.

Where it is and how to get there

The house sits right on Praia da Pipa, in Tibau do Sul, a few minutes on foot from central Pipa. You reach it along the sand or by walking down from the main street: the whole village is walkable and you will not need transport if you are staying centrally.

From here you can carry on along the sand to Baía dos Golfinhos when the tide allows, so the table links straight into the afternoon walk. If you are arriving from Natal and want the journey sorted first, look at the transfer options.

With children

The house is listed as good for kids. The format helps: a bowl is built from whatever each person wants, small plates come one at a time, and the terrace is open, so a table with children never feels boxed in. There is seating and waiter service.

The clock helps too: between noon and 3pm the terrace runs looser than at sunset, and lunch with children comes out without a long wait.

Who it suits

The table that wants raw fish with the water in view and has no intention of leaving the beachfront: poke, sushi and sashimi, with the sea a few metres away.

Couples after a sunset with a cocktail in hand: from 6pm to 8pm the terrace is exactly that, and the house takes bookings.

Anyone who eats light at midday: bowls, small plates and a kitchen that does not demand two hours at the table before you head back to the sand.

And solo travellers: the house lists itself as good for eating alone, with waiter service and a single-bowl format that needs no company.
