Tibau do Sul and Praia da Pipa are in the Top 100 of Sustainable Destinations

The recognition was granted by Green Destinations, a non-profit organization for sustainable tourism, world leader in alliance with specialized organizations, companies and academic institutions.

The 100 main destinations selected were chosen through evaluations and online reports, based on the Green Destinations sustainability standard and were carefully evaluated by the specialized International Committee that determines a general classification of Green Destinations composed of criteria such as: Management of destiny; Nature and landscape; Environment and Climate; Culture and tradition; Social Welfare; Business and Hospitality.

In an online ceremony, on October 6, 2020, our municipality was one of those chosen for the TOP 100 Sustainable Destinations by Green Destinations. The Tibau do Sul Tourism Secretariat presented 3 cases of good practices: Pipa Ecological Sanctuary, Preserve Pipa Movement and Actions against COVID-19, in addition to the 30 basic sustainability criteria of the Green Destinations Standard (GSTC-Recognized).

With this seal, the municipality knows and is committed to these values of the Green Destinations standard. All those who love the destination Tibau do Sul and Praia da Pipa hope that respect for the environment and sustainability will be pillars for the development of the place.

We spoke with Lysmar Freitas, representative of Green Destinations Brazil, member of the World Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and who answered some questions related to the recognition of Tibau do Sul and Pipa as one of the 100 best sustainable destinations.

Vive Pipa: We, as passionate about the destination Tibau do Sul and Praia da Pipa, are very happy with the recognition of the municipality as the top 100 sustainable destinations by Green Destinations and we would like to talk about the certificate, sustainability and destinations green. In addition to the 3 cases presented by the municipality's tourism secretary, what were the 30 criteria evaluated?

Tibau do Sul participated for the first time in the contest, so it was asked to present the 15 criteria detailed below for the 1st year candidates, but decided to submit another 15 that are mandatory for the 2nd year candidates. Are they:

Criteria for candidates 1st year: Sustainability Coordinator; Inventory; Tourism Policy; Protection of Nature; Landscape and Scenery; Air pollution; Smooth mobility; Waste separation; Reduce dependence on fossil fuels; Conservation of cultural heritage; Management of the impact of tourism on culture; Intangible heritage; Promotion of local products and services; Prevention and action for Health and Safety; Sustainability Standards.

In addition to the criteria for 2nd year candidates: Vision; Protection of natural resources; Animal ethics; Sewage treatment; Solid waste reduction; Monitoring of energy consumption; Respect for authenticity; Informed population on Sustainable Tourism; Satisfaction of the population; Optimize the contribution of the private sector; Optimize social impacts; Exploration by real estate agents; Community empowerment; Visitor behavior in sensitive places.

Vive Pipa: Is there a follow-up by the foundation on the commitment to Green Destinations' sustainability standards?

All reports and documents related to the contest criteria are verified online by the Organizing Committee of the Contest. The faults and inconsistencies found are questioned to the destination, which must respond to them in a timely manner, but does not need to be satisfied, since it is not an audit for certification. As it is a contest that aims to recognize the annual effort of destinations with sustainability, verification is given in each contest, to verify the evolution of the destination.

Vive Pipa: What actions do you think are the main ones to take to ensure sustainability in the municipality?

Develop a Sustainable Tourism Development Plan; Be advised, monitored and evaluated by an organization with a standard recognized by the GSTC, such as Green Destinations, and a certification accredited by the GSTC, being Green Destinations one of the only three in the world; Transparency, planning and participatory management.

Vive Pipa: Finally, I would like you to talk a little about your vision and that of Green Destinations Brasil on the importance of sustainability in a tourist destination.

Green Destinations and I believe that there is no totally sustainable destination, but rather a destination that seeks to improve its sustainability and be independently evaluated for that, maximizing benefits for both tourists and communities, minimizing whenever possible the damage that tourist activity by nature causes the destination.

The fifth edition of the Global Green Destinations Days 2020 will take place from October 6 to 9 of this year and will bring together the leaders of world-renowned tourist destinations in an online conference. On Friday 9, Elizabeth Susana Bauchwitz, Secretary of Tourism of Tibau do Sul, will present the case of the Ecological Sanctuary of Pipa to the world at 1:00 p.m. It is a unique opportunity to learn with specialists, exchange ideas and knowledge and discover practical tools and solutions on issues related to sustainability.
